IT’S been 20 years since epic romance-disaster film Titanic hit the big screen. And if that’s not enough to make you feel old, one of the young cast-members looks a lot different now.
When Alexandrea Owens-Sarno was just eight, she landed the role of Leonardo DiCaprio’s “best girl” Cora in Titanic. In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Alexandrea revealed she stumbled into acting completely by chance when her mum took her and her little sister to the auditions. As her sobbing sibling was picked out of the crowd to audition for the part of the “crying girl”, a casting agent asked Alexandrea if she would be interested in another role.
She remembered: “They all went in, and then I went in, and she just had me ad lib a couple lines, dance on her feet with her, and that was it…
“A couple of weeks later, my mum had a message on the machine saying I had gotten the part. I remember crying, screaming, running around the house, like a little maniac.”
While on the set for the Hollywood blockbuster, Alexandrea had the pleasure of working alongside Grammy Award-winning duo Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. In between filming, she remembers how Leo would keep her entertained by drawing in his sketchbook and bringing her peanut butter and jam sandwiches.
She recalled: “I was thinking, ‘This is my new best friend Leo, and he’s so cool.’
“In between scenes, we would hang out, and Kate would come up and talk to us too — she was obsessed with my sister’s hair, so she was always playing with it.”
Since her Hollywood role, Alexandrea has continued to pursue a career in acting. But it wasn’t until last year that the San Diego actress was cast in any more films. She starred in 2016 American Horror The Sluagh and she has just completed work in another scary film, A Closer Walk with Thee. On social media, the 26-year-old regularly promotes her latest projects, including improve performances.
